Rumors about Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, being mad were getting out of control during the first period of King Claudius’ regime. Ophelia, the daughter of the King’s advisor, Polonius and also Hamlet’s lover, spoke up to reveal his madness.
“He took me by
the wrist and held me hard. Then goes he to the length of all his arm, and,
with his other hand thus o’er his brow, he falls to such perusal of my face as
he would draw it. Long stayed he so. At last, a little shaking of mine arm, and
thrice his head thus waving up and down, he raised a sigh so piteous and
profound as it did seem to shatter all his bulk and end his being, That done,
he lets me go, and, with his head over his shoulder turned, he seemed to find his way
without his eyes, for out o’ doors he went without their helps and to the last
bended their light on me. ”,
said Ophelia.
This happened
when she was sewing in her closet. She saw him in an unbalanced condition, “His
stockings fouled, ungartered, and down-gyved to his ankle,” she adds. Hamlet
looked disheveled and dirty.
Hamlet’s mother, Queen Gertrude,
said that Hamlet’s madness was because of his father’s death and her marriage
to King Claudius, King Hamlet’s brother. Polonius said that it might have been
because of Hamlet’s love for Ophelia. The King then asked Rosencrantz and
Guildenstern to spy on Hamlet. They finally decided that Hamlet’s madness was not
because of love; there seemed to be no reason.
One day, the King
held a fencing match between Hamlet and Laertes, Polonius’ son, who had been
staying in France and returned to Denmark because of his father’s and his
sister’s deaths. The fencing match ended up with the deaths of both of them.
After the whole
story happens, Horatio, Hamlet’s best friend, who is known as the most honest
person in Denmark ,
says that Hamlet was just acting mad to prove that King Claudius was guilty of
killing King Hamlet. Prince Hamlet did that because he got a message from his
father’s ghost telling him to kill Claudius because he had killed Hamlet’s
father. Actually, Hamlet loved Ophelia with all his heart.
Who believes in a
ghost this day?! Who knows! Horatio is the one who is trustworthy in Denmark .
